A family ship
Gerben Visser (1880-1965), who lost his father in the Moddergat disaster in 1883, worked his way up from poor fisherman’s servant to Rhine skipper. His life’s work became finally the construction of the barge (kempenaar) “Linquenda”. This came to an abrup end in 1940, when his ship was seized by the German occupiers for the operation “Seelöwe”. The ship was only found in Braunschweig in 1947.
After repairing war damage, his son Jasper became the skipper. Builder of this model and author of this story was one of his five sons, who sailed on the ship from birth to age 18, the last six years as a sailor. The ship received a 150 HP Deutz engine in 1954, replaced in 1963 by a 290 HP Deutz engine. The ship remained in the family until 1972 when it was sold. After serving several owners, it was finally demolished in 1994 in ‘s Gravendeel.
