Emigration ship
The misery after World War II brought a considerable wave of emigration in the Netherlands. So The Holland America Line decided to alter the order for two cargo ships into two passenger ships. They were named Rijndam and Maasdam.

The Rijndam was already under construction and now was converted into a passenger ship. The Maasdam existed at that time only on the drawing table and was completed as a passenger ship in 1952. It was a good and beloved passenger ship.

The design as a cargo vessel meant that the stability was not sufficient for a passenger liner. Therefore the Maasdam was the first ship of the HAL provided with stabilizing wings. It was unusual that the ship had only cabins for 39 first class passengers and could take 854 passengers uin the tourist class, a revolutionary concept at that time.

Until 1968 the ship served the Holland Amerika Line and then she was sold to the Polish Ocean Lines. Under the name Stefan Batory she sailed until 1988 under the Polish Flag. After having some other owners, the ship was scrapped in Turkey in 2000.
